Will my customers hate talking to an AI voice?
Some customers prefer a person, and that is worth knowing. But the real comparison is rarely a machine versus you, it is an AI voice versus voicemail, a ringing-out phone, or an email answered two days late.
Customers consistently value a fast, accurate answer over who gave it. A good setup also hands over to a person the moment someone asks, without making them repeat themselves, so the AI voice is a filter in front of you rather than a replacement for you.
You are right that your customers buy you, and that is exactly the problem: you are one person, and every call you miss while on a job goes to whoever answered next. Used properly, an AI voice sits below you, catching the enquiry, answering the basics, and booking the conversation that still happens with you.
Hear it or read it yourself before it goes anywhere near a customer, and if it makes you cringe, it does not go live. That single check catches most of the setups that would have annoyed customers, before a single real caller ever hears it.
It is also worth watching how it behaves in the first couple of weeks with real customers, not just the demo. A voice that sounds fine in a test call can still ask the wrong follow-up question with a real, slightly impatient customer, and that only shows up once it is actually running.
A reasonable middle ground is a short trial period where you or a staff member reads a sample of the actual conversations each week, rather than assuming it is fine once it has been switched on and left alone.
It also helps to tell regular customers plainly that they can always ask for a person, rather than leaving them to work it out. Most people are fine with an AI voice once they know a human is one sentence away if they want one.
Whether to switch a voice tool on is always your decision.
