Is AI actually worth it for a small business?

In short

It is worth it when it replaces a specific, repeated cost you can already name, such as missed calls or unanswered follow-ups. It is not worth it as a general idea, and anyone who guarantees a result without seeing your business is guessing.

Everyone is calling with a different AI story, and every story seems to end with a monthly retainer. The honest test is simple: ask to see it running live on a business like yours, today, not a slide about what it will do eventually. Distrust anyone who guarantees a number of leads or a result, because the honest ones refuse, since the result depends partly on you.

The strongest signal that someone actually knows what they are doing is a clear list of limits, given without being asked. AI is genuinely useful for high volume, low stakes work: answering after hours, sorting enquiries, sending reminders. It is a poor fit for anything where a wrong answer is expensive or unsafe, such as quoting a complex job sight unseen.

Ignore every headline that says some channel is dead or that AI changes everything by Friday. Those stories recycle every few years while the businesses quietly using the tools just keep taking the calls. The useful question is never whether AI is good in general, it is whether a specific, named problem in your week is one it can actually fix.

A simple way to test the idea before spending anything: write down the three things in your week that take the most repeated time for the least judgement. If none of them fit that description, AI is probably not your next move this year, and that is a perfectly good answer to land on.

The businesses that get the most value are rarely the ones chasing the newest tool. They are the ones who named one specific, repeated cost honestly and fixed only that, then decided later whether a second problem was worth the same treatment.

Three Fixes starts with your actual week and checks each recommended Play for fit. If no Play genuinely fits, we email you why rather than send a padded report.
