How much does an AI consultant cost in Australia?

Search for an AI consultant and you will find two very different things sold under the same name. The first is advice: someone looks at your business and tells you where AI could help and where you don't need it. Sold one to one, advice like this runs about US$1,000, such as a US$999 AI assessment or an AI tools assessment at US$1,035.

The second is a build: someone sets a tool up, connects it to what you already use, and charges you every month to keep it going. Agency pricing for small businesses runs to a one-off setup fee of about US$1,500 to US$5,000 for configuration, training and launch, then about US$500 to US$1,500 a month to run and watch a single AI tool. Most quotes blur the two, and the build is where nearly all the money is.

Every one of these figures is in US dollars, so convert before you compare. And the comparison that matters is not against free. It is against what the problem already costs you, in hours or in lost jobs, and against paying a person to do the same work. If a monthly fee does not clearly beat both, keep your money for now, whatever the demo looks like.

Before you take any quote, be able to say in one sentence what you want done and why. A consultant handed a vague problem will quote you a vague project, and you will pay for the time it takes them to work out what you meant.

Ask any consultant three things before money moves: what exactly you are buying, what month two costs once the setup is done, and what stays in your own name if you ever leave. A fair operator answers all three plainly and in writing.
